In a recent development, TikTok is currently in the process of testing a new feature that allows users to upload videos with a duration of up to 15 minutes. While this expanded upload limit is still in the experimental phase and is being rolled out selectively, it represents a significant departure from the platform’s origins as a hub for bite-sized content. The company is yet to disclose specific details about the regions and users involved in this testing phase.
This move towards longer video uploads was initially brought to light by social media consultant Matt Navarra, who shared a screenshot of the message displayed to users with access to this new feature. According to the screenshot, TikTok aims to allow its users to share extended video content not only through the mobile app but also via desktop access.
Historically, TikTok has been synonymous with short-form video content, gaining immense popularity as a go-to platform for quick, engaging videos. However, this shift towards accommodating longer videos follows TikTok’s earlier decision to extend the maximum video length from three minutes to 10 minutes in February 2022. The decision to further increase the video duration limit to 15 minutes is set to offer content creators even more flexibility and time to share a diverse range of content. From detailed cooking recipes and beauty tutorials to educational content and comedic sketches, this change will enable creators to present their ideas without the constraints of a shorter timeframe. Presently, when a video exceeds the 10-minute threshold, creators resort to creating “Part 2” videos. With this new extended limit, creators may no longer need to segment their content into multiple parts.
This strategic move brings TikTok into direct competition with YouTube, a platform renowned for hosting long-form content. In the past, TikTok was primarily associated with short-form videos, while YouTube was hailed as the destination for extended video content.
